The Ultimate Shandong Province Discovery Tour

Standard DreamTrip
Marvel at popular sightseeing destinations with 3 wide-ranging tours — visit the birthplace of Confucius, explore ancient temples & monuments, spend a night at a hotel atop UNESCO-protected Mt. Tai & so much more. Book by September 18.

About Your Trip

Calling all adventurers, nature enthusiasts and history buffs — this DreamTrip is for you! Get ready to be wowed by spectacular landscapes, inspired architecture and ancient cultural traditions and more as you traverse Shandong province. Don’t forget your camera! You’ll want to capture every moment of the fun during the 3 different outings that take you from Jinan to Tai’an city and Qufu and back to Jinan, the provincial capital city.

Kick things off with a journey to Tai’an’s world-famous, UNESCO-protected mountain. But first, you’ll enjoy lunch and a performance of Chinese shadow puppetry. Food and art — what better way to appreciate a region’s culture? Continue to Tai’an where you’ll take a shuttle to the cableway station for your adrenaline-pumping cable-car ride* to the top of Mt. Tai (or Taishan). As the most sacred of Taoism’s 5 holy mountains in China, this is truly a special destination. Once you check into your mountaintop lodgings, you’ll be treated to a final tour before dinner. Set off on foot to check out Heaven Street, Bixia Temple, the soaring Jade Emperor Peak and more. You’re sure to be impressed by this serene setting and the mountain’s staggering beauty.

The following day, check out Dai Temple, a magnificent temple complex dating from the Song dynasty before heading to Qufu. In this ancient city, you’ll visit the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion, a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Centre around which the city has further developed. While you’re here, take in a live show that illustrates aspects of the life and philosophy of this sage man. End your day in the “Confucius Forest,” the cemetery containing the tomb of Confucius, his leading disciples and descendants.

Your final tour brings you to Heihu Spring which feeds into Jinan’s moat. From there, you’re off to Daming Lake in the historic center of the city, before returning to the hotel to enjoy some relaxing downtime on your own.

*Please note: In the case of bad weather, the cable car will be closed and you will need to hike up and down the mountain on foot.

What we love:

• Mt. Tai is not the highest of China’s Taoist holy mountains, but it is the most significant. It’s where an estimated 72 emperors over millennia had performed sacrifices and ceremonies of dedication and thanks to the gods.
• The cemetery of Confucius contains the graves of more than 100,000 of the famed philosopher’s descendants, the Kong family.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

Shandong is widely considered one of the primary birthplaces of Chinese civilization. For more than 5,000 years, the province has influenced culture and religion throughout China. Confucianism, Taoism and Chinese Buddhism are still practiced today in temples that were built centuries ago. More than half of Shandong’s border is coastline and peninsulas on the Bohai and Yellow Seas.

Within this incredible setting, you’ll find the provincial capital set along the former site of Ji River — destroyed during flooding of Yellow River — lending the city its name, Jinan (“south of the Ji”). Modern Jinan is considered the center of culture and commerce in Shandong.

South of Jinan is Tai’an, a prefecture-level city at the foot of Taishan (Mt. Tai), the most sacred of Taoism’s 5 holy mountains. Tourism is a thriving industry here, as this bustling city is the gateway to a world of natural wonders along with cultural and historic ones.

Qufu, meanwhile, is best known as the hometown of Confucius, the famed philosopher and teacher. A massive, UNESCO-protected temple complex holds shrines, monuments, pavilions and the family home, making it a popular pilgrimage site.
